Subject Quotes

Very often, when we’re talking about the importance of the individual subjects, and the difference they can make to pupils’ academic and personal development, it can be tricky to articulate the their impact succinctly.

Very often we open a file and read some prose from an ‘intent’ statement.

There’s nothing wrong with this, however, it’s more powerful if we can talk about the power of the subjects to transform lives if we can speak about them in a way that resonates with us.

To help open up these conversations, here are some quotes as the starting point for discussion about the significance of the individual subjects.

For example, this quote from Marcus Garvey for history: “A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots"

If we agree with the quote, why? And if we disagree, what would we say is the reason that history is important?!

Schools that are using these are finding that they are energizing conversations about the curriculum.

  • Five questions to guide rich professional dialogue between senior and subject leaders
  • Three documents that every senior leader should read to deepen their understanding of that subject’s landscape
